(West Palm Beach) — Do you remember being 12 years old and your dream was being a crime scene investigator, scientist searching for cures, or that one day you’d have a robot in your house like the Jetsons? On Saturday, September 17 these dreams will become reality when 150 middle and high school girls will join the Women’s Foundation of Palm Beach county and their partners for a free day long interactive Girls Leadership Institute and STEM Academy.

“Girls are passionate leaders in STEM,” said Judith Selzer, co-founder and president of the Women’s Foundation of Palm Beach County. “Our Girls Leadership Institute & STEM Academy disrupts trends that show girls leaving these fields as they advance in school due to gender bias.”

The program is aimed at empowering girls to be leaders in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. In addition to hands-on workshops exploring DNA, building computer apps and using the power of water, girls will also develop marketing plans and videos to share their STEM group projects with the community with a curriculum designed by Bright Girls.

“We are delighted to host the Girl’s Leadership Institute and STEM Academy as we are proud that approximately 70 percent of our student body is comprised of women,” said Belinda Keiser, Vice Chancellor. “The critical STEM fields contribute to our State’s leadership in attracting companies and creating jobs in the areas of life sciences, aerospace, health care, information technology, energy, and innovation. Providing the opportunity for young women to learn more about these professions maximizes their interest and potential in pursuing relevant college degrees on their path to becoming tomorrow’s leaders in the STEM and health care fields,” she added.
